Light and bright, spicy and oily or dark and brooding. That’s what’s up for grabs in the current line of limited edition whiskies that hit shelves just last month and are now being clamored for by whiskey collectors. Here’s a breakdown of what to look for to add to your collection.
Ardbeg Dark Cove
From the Islay region comes Ardbeg Dark Cove, which hit shelves on May 28th. It’s 45.5% ABV, non-chill filtered and Ardbeg’s darkest whisky to date. The Scotch is a blend of whiskies aged in ex-bourbon casks and dark sherry casks, lending the titular colour. On the nose is toffee and oak, and on the palate comes the taste of dark fruit and pepper with more coffee at the finish. It’s limited to 1,100 cases.
Highland Park ICE Edition
Also last month, the Highland Park ICE Edition hit shelves, following in the footsteps of the Valhalla Collection (which featured bottles for Thor, Loki, Freya and Odin), this whisky is promoted with Norse mythology. The Highland Scotch is 17 years old at 53.9% ABV. The colour is light and bright with tropical fruit and flowers on the nose. On the tongue the peat is balanced with a vanilla sweetness. Only 3,915 specially designed bottles are available (they each come with a wooden display case) and in 2017 it will be followed up by the FIRE edition.
